With a long history dating back to ancient India and China some 500,000 years ago, tea is the most commonly served beverage, and green tea in particular stood about among the list of teas that abound due to its hundred and one benefit. Used traditionally for treating cough and other respiratory ailments, green tea, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), is made from unfermented leaves and reportedly contains the highest concentration of powerful antioxidants called polyphenols. It is also considered one of the best natural antioxidants that is powerful in protecting the body from most kinds of illnesses and complications.
In the body’s natural process of oxidation, free radicals, which turn other molecules into free radicals themselves and interrupt the normal functioning of the cells, are produced as its by products. These by products cause eventual massive cell destruction which can even cause degenerative diseases like cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and atherosclerosis.
Green tea contains the highest concentration of powerful antioxidants called polyphenols. There are basically four of them in green tea which are collectively called catechins of which the most powerful is one called epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG.It is in this light that green tea is most revered as it contains potent antioxidants such as Epigallocatechin gallate which protects cells from further damage believed to be associated with cancer and other serious diseases. Green tea also reduces high blood pressure, battles cancer and lowers blood sugar and cholesterol.
